چکیده

This paper studies the problem of relay-assisted user scheduling for downlink wireless transmission. The transmitting base station employs hybrid automatic-repeat-request (ARQ) transmission with the possible assistance of a set of fixed relays to serve a set of mobile users. By minimizing a cost function that depends on the queue lengths at the base station and the number of retransmissions of the head-of-line packet for each user, the base station can determine an appropriate set of users to be serviced in each time slot. In the system model of interest, though, minimizing the cost function at the base station may entail selecting a set of relays to service the scheduled user set. Three cost functions are considered, including a linear function with packets arriving according to a Poisson process, a discounted version of this function with rewards, and an increasing convex function with packets that need to be drained from the queues at the base station. It is shown that a priority-index policy is optimal in all cases. Performance comparisons illustrate the benefits of relay-assisted scheduling with ARQ transmission.

Active interference cancellation-aided QoS-aware distributed ARQ for cognitive radios with heterogeneous traffics

Relay-assisted Automatic Repeat reQuest (ARQ), which allows the relays instead of the source to carry out retransmissions of packets erroneously received at the destination, is an efficient cooperative transmission technique to improve link reliability with high spectrum efficiency in wireless networks. In cognitive radio (CR) systems, however, this relay-assisted ARQ could induce large latency...

On the Performance of the Relay-ARQ Networks

This paper investigates the performance of relay networks in the presence of hybrid automatic repeat request (ARQ) feedback and adaptive power allocation. The throughput and the outage probability of different hybrid ARQ protocols are studied for independent and spatially-correlated fading channels. The results are obtained for the cases where there is a sum power constraint on the source and t...

On Relay-assisted Cellular Networks

Cellular operators are developing low-cost relays to improve the coverage and capacity of next generation cellular networks. Deploying low cost relays reduces the infrastructure cost of setting up new base stations in order to support the rapidly growing number of subscribers. In this thesis, we present methods to design the system architecture and efficient protocols to achieve maximum benefit...

Multi-radio Cooperative ARQ in Wireless Cellular Networks: A MAC Layer Perspective

Multi-Radio Cooperative Automatic Retransmission Request (MCARQ) schemes are introduced in this paper within the context of hybrid networks which combine long-range and short-range communications. Since the number of wireless devices is incessantly increasing, it is frequently possible to establish a spontaneous cooperative cluster in the close proximity of any wireless device. These devices fo...
